HISTORY

Although Chemistry had been taught at the University level in Nigeria since 1948, there was no professional body representing the interest of Chemists more than two decades afterwards. The Science Society of Nigeria, SAN, which was formed in the early 1950's provided an umbrella through which Chemists interacted with each other and other Scientists. It was not long before Chemists realized that the promotion of the advancement of Chemistry and aspirations of its members could not be satisfactorily met under SAN.

Some of the Chemists resident and working in Lagos after some preparatory meetings assembled in October 1971 and formed the present day, Chemical Society of Nigeria. It is therefore not surprising that Lagos remained the operational base of the Society for many years. Some of the foundation members are: Late Dr. A.K Fasina, one time National President and Managing Director, Faskol Chemical Services Nigeria Limited, Lagos; Dr. Femi Odeyemi, the first National Secretary ; Mr. Dan Akoh, former Director, Food and Drug Administration, Federal Ministry of Health who retired in December 1985 as

Permanent Secretary Federal Ministry of Works and Housing; Dr. Jide Koleosa, Director, Federal Institute of Industrial Research, Oshodi, Lagos , Dr Lateef Emiola, Quality Control Manager, Glaxo Nigeria Limited, Lagos; Dr. I.I.O. Allinson, one time national secretary,  and Managing Director, Lynson Chemicals Nigeria Limited, Lagos; Dr. P.C. Ojechi one time national secretary.

It is noteworthy that the Ibadan Chapter was formed in the middle 1970's and many more Chapters have since emerged in different parts of the country.
